Successful SMS Studios Share the Knowledge

Successful SMS Studios: A Panel Discussion

Do you want to own a growing, profitable studio? Is that a trick question? I'd venture to say everyone would answer yes...and if so, I hope you caught at least part of the “Successful SMS Studios: A Panel Discussion” class on Tuesday.

Eric & Shawna Anundi, Jeff & Allison Rodgers, Prem Mukherjee, Ed Zemba, and Michael & Rebecca Zoumberos...these panelists represented some of the most highly successful studios in 2008. Yes, these are the people you want to hear from! And in this truly interactive class, you were able to do just that.

Now, I have popped in to many of the classes during Imaging USA, but this one took me by surprise (in a good way). There they were, all lined up, photographers who pushed their businesses to the top. And they weren't only giving a scripted program (although that's extremely helpful, too). They also took the time to answer MANY questions from individuals in the audience.

From figuring out the best way to avoid sticker shock in the sales room to increasing the wedding averages and more, the panelists pooled their creative and business minds to give those attendees solution ideas for issues they were facing. But you had to ask!

Keep your fingers crossed that SMS brings back a similar program at Imaging USA 2010—I’ll see you there!

Thank you Dana,

Marketing & Promotions (pre-con class)

Marketing & Promotions
Lori Nordstrom
M.Photog.Cr., CPP
Allison Rodgers

This instructor combination was powerful! Both Lori's and Allison's studios are highly successful and unique, and these ladies were open with their marketing techniques in this in-depth, day-long course.

For instance, here's a sample of the information attendees were scribbling down furiously (and this was in response to a question):

As a photographer, you don't have time to do everything yourself. One of the things that both Lori and Allison do is hire college students part time. There are many art and graphic design departments, and those students are great helping out with graphic design and layouts. And you can even let teachers recommend the best students. With students, their pay can be with the pieces they end up designing (for example). Say your assistant designs a greeting card. Well, you can charge the client the price you pay the designer...so it's at-cost for you. Another good point is that these students can give you fresh new ideas...after all, as they said, “who can design in a vacuum?”

And, on an unrelated note, Lori and Allison gave their attendees another great tip: introducing yourself to somebody new at every break. As they said, you'll learn a lot from each other and what you're each doing...you never know when you'll meet a person who has a solution for one of your problems!

I am very happy with the class participation yesterday. There was a constant flow of questions all day. To me that means we are hitting on subjects that people want to know more about. Feel free to email us with any follow up questions.

Also we need to think Simply Canvas for the display canvases. You guys make us look good.

Wow!!! What a day... I better hurry up and make this post before the clock strikes 12:00!

So today we flew to Phoenix to start our Imaging USA 09 trip and getting here was a little difficult.

Here are the highlights:
• ready to sleep at 1:00 AM Wednesday
• Ever woke up - was up from 1:00 AM- 3:00 AM
(Something had frightened her and she was sure that the green alligator or the purple dragon was going to get her.)
•The next thing we remember was being woken up by a knock at the door at 7:20 AM
(Please keep in mind that we were supposed to be leaving at 7:30 to get the girls to school and get to the airport)
• freak out happened
• called April and she came to save the day with the girls! Hooray April!
• packed up and left for the airport via Nick. Hooray Nick!
• on the way we received a call from our buddy Fran Doggrell saying our plane was delayed till 12:30 (whewww - relax)
• arrived : checked luggage : walked to the gate
• told that they were switching planes and that we would be boarding in 10 minutes
(just enough time to get starbucks)

WOW - and that was all by 9:30!!!
So the flight was fine, hotel is great and we've already had a chance to hang with some very close friends, Chanel, Scott, Angela and Sam!!!

Something we do for the girls to make the days go smoother is to let them open a surprise every morning. We place the bags on the piano and just the visual thought that mommy and daddy are coming home in this many days - keeps them going. The one with the red tissue means we are coming home the next day!!

The other images are:
Jeff's favorite kind of vending machine...
Lucy - she'll be making an appearance with us on our travels
The plane we didn't know if we'd make it on
And the great Phoenix view

You'll get to meet some of our friends tomorrow!
So check back to hear the latest @ IUSA09!

Crazy week ahead for the ARP crew. This post is being brought to you from my iPhone. Hopefully the Typepad iPhone app lives up to it's hype. The pic was sent over from our buddies at BellaGrafica. I want to have our picture made in front of this banner...

So funny.
